Massage Therapy

“To keep the body in good health is a duty, otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.” Buddha

Massage is the intentional and systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to enhance health and healing. Joint movements and stretching are commonly performed as part of massage. The primary characteristics of massage are touch and movement. Massage therapy is a general term for health and healing practices involving touch and movement, which are based in massage and related manual techniques.

Massage Therapy can be a critical tool for releasing trauma, stress and injury from the body. Injury, stress and trauma cause strain on the muscles, tendons and ligaments which can lead to dysfunctional movement patterns and chronic pain, aches and more injury such as repetitive strain.

The connective tissues of the body (muscles, ligaments and tendons) are like a rope and pulley system with the joints being the pulleys. If you take one of those ropes and tie a knot in it, the rest of the ropes in the system have to shorten to accommodate which places strain on the pulleys to compensate for the tension in the ropes. Likewise, the tensions in the connective tissues of the body create incorrect movement patterns placing strain on the surrounding joints. This causes a domino affect leading to chronic pain and discomfort not in only the area affected, but throughout the body, as it attempts to move through life out of alignment.

Massage therapy, along with other restorative therapies such as physical and occupational therapies, can release these dysfunctional patterns and help bring your body back into balance over time and with consistency.

Some of the massage techniques and tools you will find at White Raven Healing & Wellness:

Deep Tissue Massage – Deep tissue massage is also called deep muscle therapy or deep tissue therapy. It is an umbrella term for bodywork systems that work deeply into the muscles and connective tissue to release chronic aches and pains. Deep tissue massage can be an active therapy with lots of stretching and moving to enable the deeper layers of muscle to relax and release.

Sports Massage – Sports massage is applied to athletes to help them train and perform free of pain and injuries. Massage therapists blend classic Swedish strokes with such methods as compression, pressure-point therapy, cross-fiber friction, joint mobilization, hydrotherapy and cryotherapy (ice massage) to meet the special needs of high-level performers and fitness enthusiasts.

Swedish Massage – Swedish massage is also known as the Western or classic style of massage. It is credited to the Swedish fencing master and gymnastics instructor, Per Henrik Ling. It is a scientific system of manipulations on the muscles and connective tissues of the body for the purpose of relaxation, rehabilitation or health maintenance. Swedish massage therapy is comprised of five basic strokes and their variations: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement (or percussion) and vibration.

Couple’s Massage – Enjoy your personalized massage with a loved one for a special day such as a birthday, anniversary or just because!

Chinese CranioSacral Therapy – CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on process of releasing deep restrictions along the spinal column to relieve pain and discomfort. Chinese CranioSacral Therapy includes Acupressure along certain meridian points to have an even greater affect on the mindy-body flow of energy for deeper release.

Cupping – an ancient technique going back thousands of years that uses cups to apply suction on the surface of the skin by either sliding the cup around or leaving them in an area for a specific amount of time. The suction lifts the skin and underlying structures to allow fresh blood and fluid into congested areas and release adhesions, soften scar tissue and mobilize joints while pulling metabolic waste to the surface of the skin to be processed by the lymphatic system. Marks are common with both techniques depending on the intensity of the suction, length of time the cups are left to sit or how much metabolic waste was stuck within the tissues.

TENS – TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is a device that delivers either a pulsed or steady electrical current by way of electrodes applied to the skin. The pulsed or steady electrical current stimulates the nerves within the muscle tissue to alleviate pain, aches, spasm, tension, soreness and tenderness. The intensity and frequency of the electrical current can be adjusted to suit your level of comfort. This device is not recommended for people who are pregnant or have implanted electronic medical devices including pacemakers and cardiodefibrillators.

Therapeutic Massage Gun – a battery operated device with multiple attachments that provides rigorous stimulation of the soft tissues of the body that mimics the “tapotement” (rhythmic percussion) massage technique.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m a new client, what can I expect during my massage appointment?

For all clients, I always ask if they need to use the restroom before getting started! Having a slightly empty stomach and empty bladder go a long way in feeling comfortable during the massage. With a new client, I typically like to spend a little bit more time to do intake so I can get to know what their body has been through over the last few years. This can include questions such as: how long has it been since you’ve had a massage? a deep tissue? how did your body respond to that? have you had any recent accidents, injuries or surgeries (anything within the last 18 months)? if so, what type of treatment did you receive? are you taking any medications that would affect your massage (blood thinners, muscle relaxers, etc.)?

Then, I give instructions on getting undressed to their level of comfort (see below), where to put their clothes and getting on the table properly. I typically like to start my clients face down which means laying on the stomach between the sheets with the face in the face cradle and bloster under the ankles. I’ll excuse myself to give them privacy and exit the room. After a few moments, I’ll knock on the door and wait for something like “I’m ready!” or “come in!” before entering. Once inside the room, I’ll ask if everything feels comfortable and make adjustments to the face cradle, bolster, table warmer temperature and room temperature if needed. Then, I begin the massage. Depending on where my client wants me to focus, I’ll spend a certain amount of time working on the body in sections undraping and redraping as I go. At some point, I’ll ask for them to roll over and scoot down. That means I’m going to lift the covers up a little to give room to move down all the way onto the table off the face cradle and turn over onto the back. Once they let me know they are turned over, I reposition the covers and bolster so they are comfortable. Then, I will work on the legs, arms, neck and shoulders in sections. When the massage is over, I exit the room to wash my hands. I’ll knock to be sure they are dressed and ready and then come back into the room. I’ll ask how everything is feeling, if they want to book another appointment and then take payment.

Do I need to get completely undressed for my massage?

Most massage therapists will recommend that you get undressed to your comfort level. That could mean getting totally undressed or leaving your underwear and/or bra on. Undergarments can have tight, restrictive elastic bands that can cut the circulation in the area off, limiting the longer lasting effects of the massage, though. They can also restrict the flow of the massage and be a bit of a nuisance to reposition. The oils in the massage lotions can break down the elastics in undergarments as well, so having your massage therapist reposition what you’ve chosen to keep on can damage them in the long run. There is also the discomfort of some types of undergarments in general, so keeping them on might not be worth it if you’re unable to really relax.

Your massage therapist has spent many, many hours in school as part of Florida’s law learning how to properly drape (cover) and undrape (uncover) the areas of the body they are working on and also how to move your arms, legs, neck and shoulders while keeping you safe and unexposed during the massage so if you do choose to get completely undressed, you can rest assured you’re always safe. You have the option to keep your undergarments on initially and then take them off when you feel comfortable after a few appointments as well.

What should I wear/bring to my massage appointment?

Most people typically wear whatever they happen to be wearing that day (like work/office clothes). It’s always wonderful to get your massage on a day off and so in that case, I recommend something loose-fitting and comfortable to get back into. I also suggest bringing filtered, mineral water to hydrate with immediately after your massage. I’ve had a few clients over the years bring their own essential oils and lotions so don’t be afraid to ask! As long as I’m comfortable with it and don’t have a reaction to it, I’m happy to accommodate.

Why does the massage therapist always tell me to drink lots of water after my massage?

One of the many benefits of massage is increased circulation. The massage flushes old, stale blood and fluid out of areas that are not receiving enough circulation which is automatically bringing fresh blood and fluid in, flooding it with new minerals, vitamins, lymph, etc. Drinking water after your massage facilitates your body’s ability to continue this process for days after, making sure you get the most out of your treatment.

All major credit cards, plus Google and Apple Pay, as well as Venmo, PayPal and Zelle are the preferred methods of payment as minimal cash is kept at the business for the safety of White Raven Healing & Wellness and/or the attending practitioner(s), so please plan to pay accordingly.

Why do you charge for the use of the card reader?

Like most things these days, there is a fee for just about everything. I do my best to keep my prices for services competitive and affordable. This, unfortunately, means being unable to absorb the fees associated with the use of the card reader.

Do you offer gift certificates?

Yes! You have the choice of a physical or electronic gift certificate.

I’m not feeling well and/or need to cancel/reschedule my appointment, what should I do?

The system will notify me when you have completed it and your appointment will be secured.
